Magnolia Home Addition

A professional couple asked Bind Architecture to design an addition to their beautiful cottage bungalow. The home is located in the Westdale neighbourhood of Hamilton and backs onto Hamilton Conservations lands. A nice sized property, and large backyard allowed for the design of an 800 square foot addition. The kitchen was moved into the addition area, and a large vaulted great room and screen porch were located to take advantage of the beautiful views of the backyard and valley. An enlarged master bedroom suite was located in the former kitchen and bedroom area of the original home.

The original cottage is set on a wooded lot, back from a quiet cul-de-sac. The front of the cottage has a stone façade, the sides and rear are a textured concrete block. The cottage is quaint and quite beautiful.

An addition was designed for the rear of the existing home. A complementary material was chosen: a vertical board and baton siding. The addition extends the living space of the home, with a new great room, kitchen, and porch.

Natural materials were used in the vaulted great room. A wood ceiling adds texture and character, while the stone accent wall creates a great feature.
